Should President Sarkozy be applauded or frowned upon for his comments about the burqa?
I agree with some areas where he is coming from. I believe that if people wish to emigrate to France, or any other country for that matter, they must be prepared to adopt a new lifestyle and culture, or they will never adapt to the new environment.
However, I also think if the clothing is of some religious significance, someone should wear it if it is their personal choice to do so. I'm somewhat tied on this issue.
Your take?
It's called Google.
I agree with Sarkozy and good on him. So many people are afraid to say anything that can be interpreted as "anti-islam" for fear of publicly being made out to be a racist.
His point is that it is not so much a religious thing (the burqa) but more of a social thing that symbolises that woman are subservient to men. He is trying to make a point that, contrary to their holy book, woman are worth more than half a man in his country.

Well if he can take away a persons personal freedom to choose how they follow their faith inside France, then France is not secular. It is just following the beliefs of Sarkozy.
If you want to get rid of their freedom to how they want to practice their religion, then, rid the Sikh Turban, The Jewish Kippah, the crosses people wear around their necks, the hobbit for nuns, the clothing people wear in other cultures, and etc etc etc., that do not fit in his European only values which are highly conservative (CONSERVING SOMETHING). What do most conservatives and neo cons stand for?
To be secular and democratic you have to cater to all, not just for yourself. By doing so, he just admitted to being a hypocrite.
He is just another neo-con , republican, conservative of the west,
The more leaders that are tolerant and understanding and are not in fear like OBAMA are true leaders. Ones that speak with wisdom and not with ignorant beliefs.
I think the French need a revolution and rid Sarkozy and get a person like Obama to lead them with pride and away from ignorance and intolerance. The west deserves great leaders like the current man that has the office of the President in the U.S.. People need to lead by example, and this man Sarkozy is a poor example. Obama marked a new beginning for the west, and this guy Sarkozy and his ways are setbacks.

No actually it is a religious thing for some women. Those women decided to wear it due to their interpretation of their beliefs. They live in France which is a western nation isnt it, and in France you can easily call the cops or anyone if someone forces you with something right. So they are not being forced, everyone has a different interpretation. This goes for people in all beliefs, some are conservative, some are not. But to them that is their belief, what he did is decide for them according to him and other racists that it is not permissible to wear it. He uses that social issue as a disguise to cover his conservative racist views just like others through manipulation. That's all. You just have to be smarter to analyze it.

Women by the way are not worth less than half of men in the Islamic faith either, so get your head checked and out of the gutter. If they were, then why did the Muslims allow women to VOTE before any other civilization did in history. How did Pakistan have a female prime minister when nations of the west did not even have one? Extremist christians and jews use these tactics through intolerance and ignorance to undermine others and to segregate another group of people. They have been giving tons of freedom to go hate another group so easily that it has become naturally imprinted in their DNA that it is ok and rational. The hate they teach is equal to what Binladen and his associates instill and brainwash others with. Every group has its bad people.
